Design System in Figma
This project involved influencing the client’s design culture and preparing the organization for the successful scaling of their design team. The work contributed to improvements in the product’s usability and accessibility, while also supporting the growth of the in-house designer through a mentorship dynamic. Additionally, a component system was developed to enable rapid feature development and prototyping, significantly increasing the team’s efficiency and speed of delivery.

My Role
Design System Lead
I had the opportunity to lead design and planning of a Design Sub-System built on top of Angular as its foundation. The client was preparing to expand the design team and they needed a Figma system that would serve as a tool for advancing current feature development rapidly and as a teaching tool for upcoming team members.
Mentor
While working with this client, I worked as a mentor to a junior designer who was designing features for the product. The mentorship covered things such as accessiblity, component creation in Figma, and other career-related topics. We were both able to connect on our passion for design and our desire to design well.
Accessibility Advocate
As we were creating new features for this product, I led the implementation of accessibility features that would future proof the product and allow it to serve a broader demographic, giving the product an additional competitive edge.

Component Slots
With component slots implemented, designers were enabled to build layouts and features more efficiently. Designs were created in close connection with their base components, eliminating the need to detach them. This approach kept the design system aligned with development practices, enhancing collaboration between design and engineering teams

Design Tokens and Variables
As part of improving the design system, design tokens and variables were set up in Figma to make the work more consistent and efficient. This included things like colors, spacing, and typography styles that could be reused across different components and screens. By using tokens, the team could make updates in one place and have them automatically apply everywhere, saving time and reducing mistakes. It also helped make the handoff to developers smoother, since the design and code were more aligned. This setup made it easier for the team to scale and build new features quickly, while keeping the design clean and unified.
